With all this fire coverage my children have been slightly on edge. My kids aren't stupid, they stood outside with me as we watched the whole sky cover in smoke. They can smell it in the air. When the west side of our town went on Pre-Evacuation notice we told them (we live on the east side). We said we didn't think it was going to happen, but just in case we needed to get ready to leave, so I we would pack a bag of a few favorite toys. Of course there was some crying, but he calmed down, and we reassured him we would make sure the whole family was safe, then he relaxed. All the little one was concerned about is we would be all together, we assured her we would be all together, because we would be in a car stuck in traffic.
My son has actually been more relaxed since we talked them, my daughter more on edge, but she is 3, there is only so much she can understand.
She went hysterical yesterday when she woke up and her daddy was already at work. She never really likes him to be at work, but normally we only talk about it a few times a week, yesterday it seemed she was always asking where her daddy was. I think she was afraid Daddy left us. As far as the fire is concerned, luckily the weather cooperated yesterday and good progress was made. It was only 5% contained for days, and days, and yesterday they were able to get it to 15%, and lots of families were able to go home, although as far as property damage it has been the worst fire in our state's history.
So last night when my husband said why don't we go out for dinner, it was perfect. My children needed a family date night. They needed a fun adventure away from the house, with the whole family together. We went out to a pizza place, where I think all they really did was consume lemonade to re-hydrated in this dryness. Then we cashed in their summer reading program coupons for frozen yogurt. Its one of those places where you pay by weight which I think is perfect, because then they get to pick any toppings they want, and I can give them a small enough amount that they actually can consume it, unlike most ice cream places. Plus I feel like the pricing is so much more reasonable.

Water
We are setting record temperatures here along with having the worst fire in the west currently, plus I don't have a/c. Being pregnant and all I'm spending a lot of the day staying hydrated. Even when I'm not pregnant I drink a lot of water. But with the dryness, the heat, the pregnancy, etc, I'm REALLY drinking a lot. Yesterday I thought I would track how much, I roughly calculated I drank 150 fluid ounces of water. You think that was enough? That is ya know, double what I should be drinking for my current weight. But that being said, I'm pregnant so I need more, and it is extremely dry up, so I need more. I'm sure you can guess what I'm doing when I'm not drinking water.
As a last thought, I asked my husband last week should we take bets on how many of my family members who come to the reunion don't listen to me and don't drink enough water and end up with a headache? Here is the thing, we all thing oh I'm fine in Utah, so I'll be fine here. But no, actually those 3,000 extra feet make a difference. Then again none of my family is coming from Utah, but its none the less the thought process.

Update
I'm just going to update my blog and say pretty much everything I typed last night was wrong. For some reason I wasn't finding the newest news stories on the internet. Stupid internet, I knew I wasn't I just figured no new news was good news. I was wrong, and now I know what site to watch. There was a lot structural damage yesterday afternoon. Apparently my husband at his employment watched the wind shift and instantly homes went up in flames, and they (his co-workers) could all see it. In the middle of the night, my husband told me if I looked out the window I could see the fire in the city. Needless to say, we are making preparations for if the fire blows north up to our mountain, and we have to be evacuated. So far over 32,000 people have been evacuated. 62,000 acres have burned, and we remain at 5% contained, which I figure is actually good, there was a real chance that number could have dropped yesterday. Sadly this is not the only fire burning currently, its just the one closest to home.
I'm not concerned for my family, my heart just bleeds for all those effected so far, and pray for all the firefighters.

Burning
It seems like my whole state is up in flames. How about yours? This is what it looks like from my front porch, when wind conditions are favorable for my town. This is what it looked like when I couldn't tell I was breathing the smoke. When the wind isn't favorable, that big black plume is covering the whole sky, every where we look, and it smells like smoke, tastes like smoke, and everything has a dark orange shadow cast on it.
It sounds like I'm complaining, but I'm not, I'm just updating. How could I complain when I'm in my house? Considering how many have been evacuated. Luckily so far they have prevented any property damage in this fire. Although there has been property damage in a fire a couple of hours north of us. So far they kept the fire from jumping mountains to the west of us. This fire is southwest. Needless to say we are praying for raining, for the firefighters, and all those displaced. They are predicting this fire won't be out for at least another three weeks.

A little late-- father's day
Here is my belated father's day post. Even though its late I had to post, because I know its the cool thing to do to post about father's day to show how awesome your man is, and how awesome you are for all the things you did for him.
Well we have you beat. My husband loves me so much he carved my initial-- a L in the ceiling just for me, on father's day. If that isn't love I don't know what is?
In actuality our dishwasher was leaking, and we had a couple gallons of water in the ceiling of our basement, and since the drywall now needs to be replaced anyway, might as well make the hole big enough to let the water out. The fact that my initial is also a right angle is all just lucky.
In fact I'm such an awesome wife he had to drive three hours to pick me up at the airport on father's day. He knew since I was pregnant, I wouldn't be cooking dinner so he also made dinner. But we did plan ahead and have presents.
I made a cake earlier in the week threw it the freezer and pulled it out when I got home. Then threw some cool whip and let the kids cover it in sprinkles. Its not his favorite dessert, but he does really like chocolate cake and cool whip.Friday, June 22, 2012
In due time
Sometimes I wonder how I'll get everything done with a baby in August. Getting school supplies in the beginning of August is must, because that is when they are on sale. But other than that I'm sure things will work out. Today in the shower I had an epiphany, my children do not need their entire winter wardrobe by the middle of August. They will still be wearing shorts for another month, or so, after school starts. Plus my son's pants should fit him through October, if not November. I'm sure if its possible it would be fun to have a new shirt or two, but even that, is negotiable, they are young enough they don't even know about getting new clothes before school. Then as I switch the laundry I remember my daughter has a whole box of 4t winter hand me downs. Ah, blessing. Now I don't have to worry about serious shopping. A pair of shoes, maybe a pair of pants, and a few new shirts. I can handle that.
(The reason this justifies a blog post is so I don't forget all this.)

Dilemma of a lifetime
I am super cheap if you didn't know that. When it comes to summer pajamas my son wears hanes (or off brand) undershirts, and boxers. That means I can get at least 5 pairs of jammies for less than $20. Much better than one set at Old Navy for $20, or one set at walmart for $9.
But here is my problem what do I put my daughter in? At first I thought why not boxers, but she isn't going to wear blue and gray plaid, it isn't beautiful enough. I'm wracking my brain, I did the same thing last year, I never really came up with a solution, we did undershirts and whatever else. I tried last night to just put her in a big shirt, but she was very distraught over not wearing pants. Right now she is sleep in long pants and a long sleeve shirt, but the pregnant woman in me is screaming its so HOT! Sure pajama sets for her are only $7 since she still wears toddler sizes, at least one more year. She is super petite but I have to put her in 4t shirts, I guess because society likes girls dressing skanky, I don't know. But now I'm think I might buy some bigger girl (as in not toddler) camisoles, and sew them up with one seam to make them skinnier, and tell her they are nightgowns/ night dresses. I wonder if she would buy it, or if she would think she needs pants.
By the way I should mention our house has no a/c.
Any good options for cheap and easy (as in less than three seams on the sewing machine) girl jammies out there?
